Discovery 947 Ride Joburg Road Closures

Discovery 947 Ride Joburg Road Closures

Dear Joburg Resident,

Discovery 947 Ride Joburg – Sunday, 17 November 2019

After 22 editions of the 947 Cycle Challenge, now in its 23rd year, the same world-class event returns with the same organizers and same flipped route as in 2018, just renamed the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg.

Discovery and 947 are excited to announce a revitalised 23rd edition of Joburg’s most iconic cycling event and encourage cyclists to move through the streets of Joburg like never before on Sunday, 17 November 2019 at Riversands Commercial Park.

As part of Discovery’s global commitment to make 100-million people 20% more active by 2025, the event will be staged with an invigorated vision to get more people moving by taking the promotion and growth of cycling in South Africa to the next level.

Back by popular demand, the flipped route spans approximately 94.7km of thrilling Joburg terrain that cyclists get to own for a day. The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg will be bigger and more inclusive than ever with the introduction of a shorter 40km route aimed at novice riders with the appetite to conquer the streets of Joburg at a distance that matches their fitness level.

The event stretches through the streets of greater Johannesburg and is the second largest mass participation cycling event in the world with around 28 000 cyclists taking part.

We understand the impact of the road closures and thank you for sharing your streets for the day. Your co-operation ensures the safety of cyclists and their loved ones and helps make a difference to many through the Ride for a Purpose campaign, which raised over R11.8 million for charity last year, and R100-million over the past seven years. All participants are encouraged to Ride for a Purpose, and there are already over 120 registered charities taking part to raise funds and awareness for their causes.

As a result, certain roads throughout Johannesburg will be closed from 04h30 – 17h00 by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Johannesburg Road Agency, Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the City of Joburg.

The alternative route map and MapIT interactive map will be on the website soon. This is designed to assist residents and motorists to navigate the city avoiding the Road Closures on Ride Joburg Sunday.

We will be notifying all residents, businesses and churches that operate directly or reside along the route by means of resident letters, flyers and via email with all the event details.

You can view / download the road closure times and alternative route map online at:

Further correspondence regarding the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg in the build-up to the event on Sunday, 17 November 2019 will be made available by means of flyers, posters, media reports, traffic advisories, on the event social media platforms and broadcasts on 947!

We thank you in advance for your support and understanding to all those who may be affected by the event and road closures.

Kind regards
Craig Henley
